Caryophyllene: Terpene Highlight

Caryophyllene: Terpene Highlight

Caryophyllene is a bicyclic sesquiterpene that is a constituent of many plants including several herbs and spices.  It is often found as a mixture with isocaryophyllene, a double bond isomer, and α-humulene, a ring-opened isomer.  Caryophyllene has a unique molecular structure containing a rare cyclobutene ring not found in other terpenes.  Caryophyllene is the most common sesquiterpene found in essential oils.  It is believed to possess soothing and cleansing properties that make it useful in a variety of aromatherapy and topical applications.  The aroma of Caryophyllene can be described as warm and peppery, similar to the fragrance of freshly cracked black pepper.

Benefits

Caryophyllene is believed to support an elevated mood by working to combat feelings of stress while encouraging positive thoughts and emotions.  It may also help to clear the mind for improved focus and cognition.  Caryophyllene has been found to have anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties that may help to soothe pain and irritation on the skin as well as in muscles and joints.  It is known to support a healthy immune response for faster healing while helping to ease pain caused by inflammation.  When diluted and applied topically, Caryophyllene may help to cleanse the pores and smooth skin texture for a glowing, youthful complexion.
