Hocus Pocus: Shimmering Activated Charcoal Soap

Hocus Pocus: Shimmering Activated Charcoal Soap

Halloween is a favorite holiday for many and can be a night filled with fun, costumes, and scary adventures. Celebrating is often associated with lots of makeup and enjoying sticky sweet candy which means we will need a great soap to help us clean up once the fun is over. A nearly black bar of soap with a sheen of gold sparkles captures the darkness and fun of the spookiest night of the year. Activated charcoal can work to gently exfoliate the skin while helping to remove impurities and give the soap a beautiful dark grey color. Gold mica adds a hint of shimmer and magical whimsy to the simple bar. Moonlight Vanilla Fragrance Oil and Rustic Woods Fragrance Oil come together to form a richly sweet and woodsy scent like a breeze rattling through a dark forest on Halloween night. The addition of Hansel & Gretel Fragrance Oil adds a bit of spice and mystery to the aroma.  Ingredients 5lb Silicone Loaf Mold 22 oz of Olive Oil 13.75 oz of Palm Oil 13.75 oz of Coconut Oil 5.5 oz of Cocoa Butter Wafers 3 oz of Sweet Almond Oil 17.4 oz of Distilled Water 7.8 oz of Sodium Hydroxide Lye 2 oz of Moonlight Vanilla Fragrance Oil 2 oz of Rustic Woods Fragrance Oil ½ oz of Hansel & Gretel Fragrance Oil 3 tbsp of Activated Charcoal 2 tsp of Gold Mica Powder Instructions Weigh and combine the fragrance oils, then set them aside. Add the sweet almond oil, activated charcoal, and gold mica to a small bowl and use a small whisk to combine, ensuring there are no clumps. Weigh the olive oil, palm oil, and cocoa butter and combine them in a large bowl.  Place the bowl on top of a large pot about ⅓ full of water. Bring the water to a boil. Heat the oils until fully melted and blended, stirring occasionally.  While the oils are melting, weigh out the lye and water in two separate bowls. Slowly add the lye to the water while gently stirring until the lye is fully dissolved and the liquid is clear.  Let the oils and lye mixture both cool to around 110 degrees Fahrenheit, ensuring that they are within 10 degrees of each other.   Place the immersion blender into the oils, tapping it on the bottom of the bowl to release any air bubbles.   Slowly and gently pour the lye water into the oil mixture. Pouring down the side of the bowl or down the shaft of the immersion blender can reduce the chance of splashing.  Pulse the blender a few times, watching as the oils and lye start to combine.  Switch between short pulses and stirring with the blender until the mixture comes together to a very light trace.   Working quickly, add the fragrance oil blend and dispersed activated charcoal and mica mixture and whisk to combine. Do not use the immersion blender for this step.  Once the soap reaches about a medium trace, pour it into the mold, scraping the bowl to ensure no soap is left behind. Tap the molds on your table or counter to release any trapped air bubbles.   Cover the mold and allow the soap to sit in the mold for 48-72 hours at room temperature. Unmold soap, cut into bars, and allow to cure for 4-6 weeks.    You may also enjoy... Vino: Red Wine Soap

A night of luxurious self-care can be the perfect time to enjoy a glass or two of our favorite red wine. It may come as a surprise that this delicious beverage can also be beneficial to the skin when incorporated into our routine. A base of olive oil, palm oil, coconut oil, and castor oil makes a firm and cleansing bar of soap that is great for additives. Shea butter and cocoa butter work together to hydrate the skin and allow it to absorb beneficial ingredients while also soothing irritation and dryness. The naturally occurring sugars in red wine help to encourage a stable, rich, and luxurious lather in soap while its rich vitamin and antioxidant content work to nourish the skin. Dark Amber Fragrance Oil and Rose Fragrance Oil come together to form a rich and musky floral aroma that is as dark and luscious as a glass of red wine.  Ingredients Silicone Soap Molds Ice Cube Tray 16.99 oz of Olive Oil 11.28 oz of Palm Oil 11.28 oz of Coconut Oil  2.83 oz of Castor Oil 2.83 oz of Shea Butter 2.78 oz of Cocoa Butter Wafers 15.08 oz of Prepared Red Wine  6.75 oz of Sodium Hydroxide Lye 1 oz of Dark Amber Fragrance Oil ½ oz of Rose Fragrance Oil Instructions The day before soap making, add around 20 oz of dry red wine to a saucepan and bring to a simmer. Bon Voyage: Exfoliating & Nourishing Travel Soap

Seeing the world can be a wonderful adventure but the effects of trotting around the globe are not always so kind to our bodies. Sweat and grime from long travel days, dry air in plane cabins, and changes in climate from place to place can take a toll on the skin, leaving it in desperate need of soothing and moisture.  A nourishing and exfoliating solid travel soap can come to the rescue to cleanse and hydrate the skin when we are on the go.  A standard blend of olive oil, coconut oil, and palm oil creates a hard and long-lasting bar that can travel around the globe with us.  The addition of sweet almond oil, hemp seed oil, avocado oil, and shea butter to this classic recipe helps the soap to soothe dryness and irritation that can come from travel conditions and restore hydration to the skin.  A slice of exfoliating natural loofah inside each bar helps to scrub off dirt and dead skin, allowing the nourishing properties of the soap to penetrate deeply into the skin.  Pirates Blend is a warm and spicy combination of essential oils that is based on an ancient formula meant to support wellness.  Sandalwood Vanilla Fragrance Oil adds notes of musk and sweetness and helps to extend the staying power of the aroma.  The small round bars can be stored in tins and thrown into a suitcase or bag for easy travel use.  Ingredients 24 Silicone 4 oz Round Soap Molds 24 Slices of Natural Loofah 24 oz of Olive Oil 12 oz of Coconut Oil 12 oz of Palm Oil 6 oz of Sweet Almond Oil 6 oz of Hemp Seed Oil 3 oz of Avocado Oil 6 oz of Shea Butter  14 oz of Distilled Water 6 oz of Sodium Hydroxide Lye 3 oz of Pirates Blend 2 oz of Sandalwood Vanilla Fragrance Oil Instructions Weigh and combine the essential oil blend and fragrance oil, then set them aside.  Place one slice of loofah into each cavity of the molds and set them aside.  Weigh each base oil and butter and combine them in a large bowl. Let the oils and lye mixture both cool to 120 degrees or below, ensuring that they are within 10 degrees of each other. Switch between short pulses and stirring with the blender until the mixture comes together to a light trace.   Working quickly, stir (do not blend) in the essential oil and fragrance oil blend.  Once the soap reaches about a medium trace, slowly pour it into the molds over the loofah slices, scraping the bowl to ensure no soap is left behind.  Tap the molds on the table or counter to release any trapped air bubbles.   Cover the molds and allow the soap to sit in the molds for 48-72 hours at room temperature.  Unmold the soap and allow it to cure for 4-6 weeks.    You may also enjoy... Sweet Honeybee: Honey & Beeswax Soap

Nothing lets you know that spring is moving in quite like a fuzzy little honeybee searching around the garden for the first floral blooms.  What better way to usher in the return of warmer weather and vibrant plant life than an ode to the small but mighty pollinator and sign of changing seasons, the sweet honeybee.   This soap starts with a classic cold process recipe and adds both honey and beeswax, complemented by a garden fresh scent.  Beeswax adds hardness to the finished bars, making them longer lasting.  Honey is believed to have humectant and the antibacterial properties may help keep skin moisturized while reducing irritation.  Evening Jasmine Fragrance Oil and Black Raspberry Vanilla Fragrance Oil combine to create a juicy and sweet fruity floral aroma that is reminiscent of sitting in a blooming garden, watching the honeybees at work.  Using bubble wrap to create a honeycomb pattern on the soap brings a visual element to these buzzing bee-themed bars.  Ingredients 33.5 oz of Olive Oil 33.5 oz of Coconut Oil 33.5 oz of Palm Oil 11.5 oz of Shea Butter  1.5 oz of Beeswax Pearls 32 oz of Distilled Water 12 oz of Sodium Hydroxide Lye 4 oz of Local Honey 2 oz of Evening Jasmine Fragrance Oil 1.5 oz of Black Raspberry Vanilla Fragrance Oil Instructions Cut two strips of bubble wrap per mold that are the same length and width as your loaf molds.  Place one in the bottom of each mold, bubble side up, and set the other pieces aside.  Weigh and combine your essential or fragrance oils, then set them aside.  Weigh each base oil and beeswax and combine them in a large bowl.  Place the bowl on top of a large pot about ⅓ full of water.  Bring the water to a boil.  Heat the oils until fully melted and blended, stirring occasionally.  While your oils are melting, weigh out the lye and water in two separate bowls.  Slowly add the lye to the water while gently stirring until the lye is fully dissolved and the liquid is clear.  Let your oils and lye mixture both cool to 120 degrees or below, ensuring that they are within 10 degrees of each other.   Place your immersion blender into the oils, tapping it on the bottom of the bowl to release any air bubbles.   Slowly and gently pour your lye water into your oil mixture.  You can pour down the side of your bowl or down the shaft of your immersion blender to reduce the chance of splashing.  Pulse your blender a few times, watching as the oils and lye start to combine.  Switch between short pulses and stirring with the blender until the mixture comes together to a light trace.   Add honey and pulse the blender a few times to incorporate.  Working quickly, stir (do not blend) in the essential oil or fragrance oil blend.  Once your soap reaches about a medium trace, pour it into your mold, scraping the bowl to ensure no soap is left behind.  Tap the molds on your table or counter to release any trapped air bubbles.  Top each mold with a second piece of bubble wrap, bubble side down, and gently press into the surface of the soap.  Cover the mold and allow the soap to sit in the mold for 48-72 hours at room temperature.  Unmold soap, cut into bars, and allow to cure for 4-6 weeks.  You may also enjoy... Simple Cold Process Soap

Simple Cold Process Soap

Cold Process Soap can have a wide variety of shapes, sizes, colors, and scents when made by talented artisans but the base recipe is what allows the magic to happen.  A solid starting place for a simple and effective cold process soap is a combination of coconut oil, olive oil, palm oil, and castor oil which create a firm but gentle bar of soap with a good lather.   The perfect scent can be crafted by blending a few high-quality essential oils and/or fragrance oils to complete the soap.   Percentage of Oils in the Formula37.5% Palm Oil27.5% Coconut Oil30.0% Olive Oil5.0% Castor Oil Saponification Value for the Blend of Oils0.1507 Sodium Hydroxide Saponification Value at 0% lye discount0.1432 Sodium Hydroxide Saponification Value at 5% lye discount33% Lye Solution (amount of sodium hydroxide X 2 = amount of water) Fragrance for the Blend Calculated According to IFRA StandardsMaximum 5.0% of the total oils + Sodium Hydroxide (dry) in the formula Recipe for a 48 oz.
