Aldehydic scent notes

Bright, sparkling, and slightly soapy; adds an airy, effervescent lift to floral and fresh blends.

Aldehydic notes smell bright and clean, like the air off freshly ironed cotton, with a waxy sparkle that is hard to place. The effect comes from aliphatic aldehydes, aroma chemicals with names like C-10, C-11 and C-12. Perfumers began dosing them heavily into florals in the 1920s, and the style has stayed ever since.

In a blend they lift the opening and keep florals from feeling heavy. A little goes a long way. Overdo it and the sparkle turns sharp and soapy, so pair aldehydes with powdery or white floral notes and keep the amount small.
