Let’s Get Started: How to Use Your New Oil or Base

Welcome to your scent journey! Whether you're crafting a candle, blending skincare, or adding aroma to your home, here's how to safely and effectively use your oil or base.

Using your Essential Oil

What is an Essential Oil?

A concentrated, natural extract from plants—intended for aromatherapy, topical use with dilution, and DIY formulations.

Popular Uses:

  • Diffuser: Add 3–10 drops to a diffuser with water. Adjust based on room size and personal preference. Always follow your diffuser’s specific instructions.
  • Topical (Diluted): Blend essential oils with a carrier oil before applying to skin. Always refer to the IFRA usage guidelines for safe concentration levels specific to the oil you're using—these can range from 0% to 100%. Perform a patch test before full use to check for skin sensitivity.
  • Bath: Mix essential oil with a carrier oil or unscented bath product (like Epsom salt or body wash) before adding to water. Do not apply directly to bath water.
  • Laundry: Add a few drops to wool dryer balls or mix with baking soda for a natural fabric refresher. Avoid direct contact with clothing to prevent staining.
  • DIY Crafting: Suitable for making soaps, candles, body oils, sprays, and other home or personal care products. Always verify flash points, IFRA % usage, and compatibility with your recipe.

Safety Notes:

  • Do not ingest. Essential oils are not intended for internal use.
  • Keep out of reach of children and pets.
  • Avoid contact with eyes, mucous membranes, and broken skin.
  • Store properly. Keep oils tightly capped in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight.
  • Consult a professional before using essential oils on children, pets, or if you are pregnant or have a medical condition.

Using your Fragrance Oil

What is a Fragrance Oil?

Fragrance oils are aromatic blends created for use in cosmetics, home fragrance, and personal care products. They may contain natural ingredients, safe synthetic aroma compounds, or both—designed for scent performance and consistency.

  • Safe synthetics are lab-created ingredients designed to mimic or enhance natural components in products like fragrances and cosmetics. They are often chosen for their consistency, safety, and sustainability compared to some natural alternatives. These ingredients are typically assessed for safety by regulatory bodies, such as the International Fragrance Association (IFRA), which is referenced on our product pages.

Popular Uses:

  • Candles & Wax Melts: Follow your wax supplier’s guidelines and check the flash point. Typical fragrance load ranges from 6–10%, depending on wax type and room size.
  • Soap Making: Compatible with melt-and-pour, cold-process, and liquid soaps. Refer to the IFRA safety guidelines for each fragrance’s approved use rate.
  • Room Sprays, Perfumes & Diffusers: Dilute with a proper base (e.g., perfumer’s alcohol, dipropylene glycol, or carrier oil).
  • Crafts & Gifts: Add scent to sachets, potpourri, wax beads, or reed diffusers. Always test for compatibility.

Safety Notes:

  • Do not ingest. Fragrance oils are for external use only.
  • Not for undiluted use on skin. Always blend with a base and follow IFRA usage limits.
  • Patch test body products before use, especially for sensitive skin.
  • Keep out of reach of children and pets.
  • Store properly. Tightly cap and keep in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight.
  • Review allergen disclosures. IFRA documents and SDS are available upon request.

Using Your Carrier Oil/Base

What is a Carrier Oil/Base?

Carrier oils are gentle, plant-based oils used to dilute essential oils for topical use. They’re also perfect as standalone moisturizers, massage oils, and skincare bases. We also offer specialty bases like liquid Castile soap, diffuser base, and melt & pour soap for DIY formulations.

Popular Uses:

  • Essential Oil Dilution: Blend essential oils with carrier oils for safe topical use. Always refer to IFRA guidelines for dilution rates.
  • Massage & Body Care: Apply directly to skin or mix with essential oils for a customized massage or body oil.
  • Facial & Haircare: Our favorites are to use golden jojoba or sweet almond oil as a light facial moisturizer, beard oil, or scalp treatment.
  • DIY Formulations: Add essential oils or fragrance oils to melt & pour soap, liquid Castile soap, or our Diffuser Base Blend for custom creations.

Common Carrier Oils:

  • Fractionated Coconut Oil
  • Sweet Almond Oil
  • Golden Jojoba Oil
  • MCT Oil
  • Liquid Castile Soap

  • Always perform a patch test before widespread use, especially on sensitive skin.
  • Store in a cool, dark place away from sunlight and moisture.
  • Shelf life varies by oil type—use within 6–12 months of opening for best results.
  • For external use only unless otherwise labeled and certified for internal use.
