Origin story

Tea tree oil is primarily produced in Australia, where the oil was originally discovered and commercialized, with additional production in South Africa and China.

Unlike peppermint, lemon or orange — oils with centuries of history — tea tree only reached wide Western awareness recently; it wasn't widely known in the United States until roughly the early 1990s, arriving on the back of the aromatherapy movement. It has had a strong run since, becoming one of the most recognizable names in natural wellness even as it navigates fresh regulatory scrutiny in Europe.

Extraction & distillation

The oil is steam-distilled from the leaves, and Melaleuca is a generous producer — tea tree yields notably more oil than most essential-oil crops, much like eucalyptus.

Production in Australia's dry-air growing regions has become impressively mechanized: automated overhead drip-irrigation systems run across entire fields, each tube ending in a small sock that meters water precisely to the root system at precisely the right time. Most commercial tea tree oil is sold as distilled, though the oil can be re-distilled — an unusual step a processor may take to refine specific lots.

Chemistry

One molecule defines tea tree oil: terpinen-4-ol, its main chemical component and the driver of the antimicrobial and antiviral activity the oil is studied for. Quality buyers read a tea tree GC through two numbers — terpinen-4-ol above 40% (preferably above 41%), and cineole below about 5% (ideally nearer 3%).

Both molecules are cheaply available as synthetics or natural isolates, which makes tea tree a target for dilution and extension. Chirality testing helps here: natural terpinen-4-ol from Australian and South African oil carries an essentially fixed, published enantiomer ratio that added material disturbs.

Why we use it

We were introduced to tea tree in the early 1990s by a great friend, John Fergus, at an IFEAT gathering in Israel, and we've worked with the oil ever since — bringing it in from Australia and South Africa, and even re-distilling it ourselves, something few processors do.

We consider it one of the most effective natural antimicrobial materials available because of its studied terpinen-4-ol content — and we equally believe in respecting the science on limits: these are powerful materials, and dose discipline matters.

Safety notes

Tea tree oil is a potent, concentrated material intended for use in manufacturing and finished goods at low levels — it takes very little to do its job in a soap, lotion, or therapeutic compound. It should always be properly diluted for skin contact and never ingested.
