What is terpinen-4-ol?
Terpinen-4-ol is the main chemical component of tea tree oil and the molecule behind the antimicrobial and antiviral properties the oil is widely studied for. Quality tea tree oil typically carries more than 40% of it.
How can you tell a quality tea tree oil?
Read the gas chromatograph: terpinen-4-ol above 40% (preferably 41%+) and cineole below about 5% — the lower the better, ideally around 3%. For extra assurance, chirality testing of the terpinen-4-ol can reveal added synthetic or isolated material, because pure Australian and South African oil has an essentially fixed enantiomer ratio.
Why is tea tree oil sometimes adulterated?
Because its two marker molecules — terpinen-4-ol and cineole — are readily available very cheaply as synthetics or as natural isolates from other oils, they're sometimes added to stretch genuine tea tree oil to a cost. That's exactly why analytical validation matters when buying from new sources.
Is tea tree oil new?
Relatively, yes. Where peppermint, lemon and orange have centuries of commerce behind them, tea tree wasn't widely known in the West until around the early 1990s, riding the growth of aromatherapy. It's one of the youngest oils to reach household-name status.
