Origin story

Most commercial eucalyptus oil comes from Eucalyptus globulus, produced primarily in China with significant production still in Australia, the tree's native home. Crude globulus oil straight from the field doesn't smell good — the low-boiling terpene fraction carries harsh, off-smelling aromatics — so nearly all commercial oil is re-distilled.

The eucalyptus family is enormous: dives, staigeriana, polybractea, radiata, globulus and many more chemotypes of what Australians simply call gum trees. Many are rich in cineole; others are enriched in different aromatic chemicals entirely.

The trees themselves are famously volatile — their terpene content is combustible enough that in the Australian bush a single gum tree struck by lightning can flare up like a matchstick among its neighbors.

Extraction & distillation

Eucalyptus oil is steam-distilled from the leaves, but the defining step is what happens next: rectification. Pure crude Eucalyptus globulus typically contains only around 65–68% cineole, and to reach the clean, crisp profile the market expects — including the standard 80/85 commercial grade — the oil is re-distilled and quite heavily fractionated, stripping out the harsh low-boiling terpenes that fight its medicinal character.

Eucalyptus radiata is a notable exception: naturally enriched in eucalyptol, it can generally be used as an 80/85 replacement as-is, though it remains a limited, small-commerce oil beloved in aromatherapy.

Chemistry

The signature molecule is eucalyptol — 1,8-cineole — present in heavy concentration and the reason eucalyptus smells the way it does. Cineole appears across many herb oils (it's the same molecule quality buyers watch for in lavender, where it's unwelcome), but eucalyptus is its commercial home: rectified oils are enriched well beyond the crude 65–68% level.

The balance of the oil is low-boiling monoterpenes such as alpha-pinene and beta-pinene — volatile enough to make the living trees genuinely combustible.

  • Cold, flu and congestion products — chest rubs, inhalants, and shower steamers in the Vicks VapoRub tradition (eucalyptol + menthol)
  • Breathe-easy aromatherapy blends, classically with peppermint and rosemary
  • Cough drops, confection, toothpaste and oral care flavors
  • Perfumery, soaps, shampoos and household cleaners, where its low cost makes it a workhorse add-back

Why we use it

We may have sold more eucalyptus than almost any other oil — alongside peppermint, orange and lemon it's one of the pillars of our business, in both oil and isolated-eucalyptol form. It's the material many of us met as kids on a sick day, and we love it for the same reasons formulators do: it's inexpensive, versatile in blending and formulation, and does its job in everything from a flavor to a fragrance to a traditional remedy.

It's also one of the seven oils used in a 2023 olfactory-enrichment memory study published in Frontiers in Neuroscience, alongside rosemary and lavender — an association researchers continue to explore.
