Menthol

Menthol is the monoterpene alcohol responsible for the cooling sensation of mint. It is the single most important component driving the peppermint category, and the key value driver behind corn mint (Mentha arvensis) production.

Chemistry

Menthol (C10H20O) produces its signature cooling effect as a sensory response felt in the mouth, lungs, and nostrils rather than an actual drop in temperature.

Corn mint (Mentha arvensis) naturally yields up to roughly 80% free menthol, versus around 40-44% at most in true peppermint (Mentha piperita). That difference is why menthol is extracted far more cheaply from corn mint. Menthol extraction originated in Japan, and today India controls the menthol market.

Where menthol is used

  • Oral care - toothpaste and mouthwash, where it signals cleanliness
  • Chewing gum and mint confections
  • Digestive and gut medicines
  • Topical pain-relief rubs and cooling creams
  • Breathe-easy and aromatherapy spa products

Safety notes

Menthol is a potent sensory active. Use at appropriate dilution; high concentrations can irritate skin and mucous membranes, and menthol-rich products should be kept away from the faces of infants and young children.
