Autumn Gold: Brightening Turmeric Soap

Autumn Gold: Brightening Turmeric Soap

Autumn is the most beautiful time of year to many and the array of golden hues that sweep through the forest as the weather cools are undoubtedly awe-inspiring. Though the views are beautiful, the weather of autumn can leave our skin in need of a little bit more support to remain hydrated and happy. A generous 10% superfat in this recipe helps to create a moisturizing bar that will cleanse the skin while combatting the dryness of autumn weather. Both cocoa butter and shea butter boost the hydrating power and make the soap nourishing and gentle on the skin. The addition of turmeric powder helps to achieve healthy, bright, and smooth skin while providing a touch of gentle exfoliation and an eye-catching orange hue. Creamy Nutmeg BBW Type Fragrance Oil gives the soap a rich and creamy sweet aroma while Orange 5x Essential Oil adds fresh and tangy citrus notes to the blend. Together these fragrances capture the beauty and warmth of an autumn sunset peaking through the golden leaves.

Ingredients

Instructions

  1. Weigh and combine the fragrance and essential oils, then set them aside. Add ¼ cup of sweet almond oil and 3 tbsp of turmeric powder to a small bowl and use a small whisk to combine, ensuring there are no clumps.
  2. Weigh the base oils and combine them in a large bowl.  Place the bowl on top of a large pot about ⅓ full of water. Bring the water to a boil. Heat the oils until fully melted and blended, stirring occasionally.
  3. While the oils are melting, weigh out the lye and water in two separate bowls. Slowly add the lye to the water while gently stirring until the lye is fully dissolved and the liquid is clear.
  4. Let the oils and lye mixture both cool to around 80-100 degrees Fahrenheit, ensuring that they are within 10 degrees of each other.  Starting at a lower temp will help to combat acceleration from the citrus oil.
  5. Place the immersion blender into the oils, tapping it on the bottom of the bowl to release any air bubbles.
  6. Slowly and gently pour the lye water into the oil mixture. Pouring down the side of the bowl or down the shaft of the immersion blender can reduce the chance of splashing.
  7. Pulse the blender a few times, watching as the oils and lye start to combine.  Switch between short pulses and stirring with the blender until the mixture comes together to a very light trace.
  8. Working quickly, add the fragrance and essential oil blend and dispersed turmeric mixture and whisk to combine. Do not use the immersion blender for this step.
  9. Once the soap reaches about a thin medium trace, pour it into the mold, scraping the bowl to ensure no soap is left behind. Tap the molds on your table or counter to release any trapped air bubbles.
  10. Cover and wrap the mold to encourage gel phase and allow the soap to sit in the mold for 48-72 hours at room temperature. Unmold soap, cut into bars, and allow to cure for 4-6 weeks.
