CBD and Essential Oils FAQ

What is CBD?

Abbreviated as CBD, cannabidiol is one of the naturally occurring cannabinoids found in cannabis plants, the second most prevalent active ingredient.

What are cannabinoids?

Cannabinoids are one of the diverse chemical compounds that act on the endocannabinoid system in the body. These include both the endocannabinoids produced naturally in the body and phytocannabinoids from cannabis. The two most well-known cannabinoids are THC and CBD.

What is an essential oil?

Essential oils are highly concentrated oils usually obtained by cold-pressing or steam-distilling plant parts to produce an aroma that is the “essence” of the plant from which it is extracted. Terpenes are one of the primary components of essential oils.

How does CBD work?

Cannabidiol interacts with the endocannabinoid system, which is part of the nervous system that plays a part in appetite, stress, sleep, pain, memory and immune function.

What are the benefits of CBD?

CBD is commonly known to help with issues related to relaxation, pain alleviation, reducing anxiety, combating insomnia, and boosting mental productivity and clarity. Studies are still currently exploring all of the benefits and uses of CBD.

Will CBD make you “high”?

CBD will not get you high. THC has the psychoactive chemical and even though it comes from the same plant, CBD alone is nonintoxicating and cannot produce any psychoactive effects.

How are CBD and essential oils used together?

CBD and essential oils can be combined in both ingestible and topical products depending on their desired effect.

What are the benefits of using CBD and essential oils together?

CBD has many advantageous properties that make it suitable for a variety of issues. Essential oils happen to share some of those properties with CBD. The terpenes in both broad/full-spectrum CBD oils and essential oils are a substantial factor for why they work together. The essential oils can deliver terpenes already found in the full spectrum CBD, so the existing terpenes have a greater effect. The essential oils may also contain terpenes not found in the CBD, and provide added benefit by enhancing the overall terpene profile. All of these elements work together through the entourage effect.

What are terpenes?

Terpenes are the organic hydrocarbon compounds responsible for the aroma and flavor of a plant, and can also be found in some animals. More than 100 different terpenes have been identified. Broad-spectrum and full-spectrum CBD products and essential oils all contain terpenes.

What is the entourage effect?

The entourage effect is the anomaly in which the many components of the cannabis plant interact with the human body and their different elements amplify each other’s energy, creating a stronger effect than either constituent on its own. Full-spectrum and broad-spectrum CBD products combine CBD with other naturally occurring terpenes and cannabinoids to be more effective than isolates alone. Because essential oils contain many of the same terpenes that are found in CBD products, they also contribute to the entourage effect when used concurrently.
